Kid Science Fun - Pinecone Experiment (1.) Gather dry pinecones. (2.) Place in water overnight. (3.) Pinecones will be closed in the morning! Why? The pine cone is adapting to its environment! It closes up when wet ("protecting the seeds inside the cone").
